Terra-Cotta Golem from OJ #26

I'm looking for a visual reference for this golem, and the only piece I've found was from the WOG comic on the last page.

I was wanting to say that Icarus had drawn this golem before, but I can't seem to find a link to it.

If he had it never got finished or uploaded to the mag. I recall Cebrion asking me to include some of those monsters in my comic because we lacked art on them.

Well ... Unemployed Bullywug, you're absolutely right. I did.

I'll be really, really honest here, folks. The lack of art on them is due, in part, to me. I was asked to do the art for the article, and had been working with the editor on the project, and when I was doing the art, I'd posted some initial sketches, and sent them to him for feedback, and he simply never got back to me.
We all know that the OJ isn't really producing right now, and it was this issue (#26) that was its swan-song, at the time. I'm really hoping that I may be able to pull some strings and at least protect the OJ from being lost.

At any rate, if you'd like to see the initial sketches that were submitted for the article (before any final rendering had been done), you can find them here, in my personal thread, The Artwork of Icarus. Take a look, and I hope that these are at least a little consolation for what you're looking for. Sorry that the artwork wasn't ever finished. Be sure to scroll down another post or two, there's a larger version of it posted.

I kind of wish someone had drawn my attention to this thread at some point in the last few weeks, but, I guess that's no fault but my own for not searching enough. :)

That was exactly what I was looking for. I knew I had seen it somewhere before, but I just couldn't find that thread!

Compiling OJ and CF monsters into my own "Monster Manual", with artwork included. I've tried to combine the two references, and this is what I wound up with...

Also, I'm not joining the square-hat-club. Laughing

Very nice. I like the very blocky knuckles you gave him, and the bracers and torcs, too. ... and that's an interesting face, too. I'm intrigued that you went with armor carved into the "statue". I'm a little curious what made you decide to go with that type of armor ... it sort of looks almost Mongolian, or Chinese ...

Kind of flattered that you mimicked the kilt and belt design from my sketch. :)

Oh, and yeah ... I don't know why Greg Vaughan put in a square hat. Maybe I'll see him again at PaizoCon this year, and I'll get to ask him. He's a great author. I loved his "Shadows of-" and "Wrath of the Abyss" adventures in Dungeon Magazine (set in Sterich).

"Someone in this town
Is trying to burn the playhouse down
They want to stop the ones who want
strange-looking square hats on their heads
But everybody wants
strange-looking square hats on their real heads."

I'm glad you like him.

My original sketch did not have an armored look, and he wound up looking like a sumo-wrestler because he was so bulky. It wasn't a bad look, but he looked strictly like a grappler... and that's not the direction I wanted to go.

In Mortellan's version of the golem, to me, it appeared to me that he had little squares on his body. I thought it looked a little like armor. Then I saw some pictures of real terra-cotta soldiers:

Yup. I was sold.

My goal when I draw these characters/monsters, is to honor the author and the artists who brought them to life. I thought the designs looked great, and they most definitely needed to be left on.
