Bissel

by Tim “Enoch Pratt” O’Donnell

The March of Bissel, the Littlemark, is the gateway between three worlds- the Baklunish West, the Sheldomar Valley, and the rest of the Flanaess. A melting pot, Bissel represents Oeridian, Suel and Baklunish cultures. Campaigning in this country is for DMs who want to interact with diverse cultures and to explore a variety of role-playing opportunities beyond the classic dungeon crawl.

Located very nearly at the center of the Fanaess, Bissel has been a breeding ground for adventure before, during and after the Greyhawk wars. Vigorous trade and intrigue abound in the environs of the country. Because of its value strategically and economically, Bissel’s former capital of Thornward is coveted by all of the surrounding countries.

After the Greyhawk Wars, and the temporary occupation of Bissel by neighboring Ket, the city of Thornward has become a divided city.
Separated into quarters by treaty, the bustling city hosts ambassadors representing Bissel, Gran March, Veluna and Ket. A contentious conclave, Thornward, it is said, rivals Greyhawk City in corruption.

In spite of its small size, the political maneuverings and brisk merchant trade never stops. Business is conducted at all hours of the day or night, suggesting the bustling Thornward is a city that never sleeps.

In 590 CY the central farming and trading town of Pellak became the new capital of Bissel, away from the intrigues of Thornward.

Country specific resources:
None?

Adventures in this country include:
-Bissel is known for its Border Companies, which are in the process of rebuilding since the occupation of Ket. These companies are seeking scouts and rangers to fill their ranks.
-Pellak has an outpost of the Knights of the Watch at Castle Oversight.
-Adventurers can be used as pawns in the intrigues between the four leadership factions in Thornward.
-Along trade routes that have existed since before the Twin Cataclysms, adventurers can choose to be bandits or mercenaries depending on the propensity of the party.
- Adventures set in and around Bissel include Dungeon #89 Rage, Dungeon #91 Sloth, Dungeon #93 Vanity, Dungeon #95 Lust, Dungeon #98 Gluttony

Adventures in nearby areas include:
-The surrounding mountain ranges around Bissel provide an array of interactions. The Lortmil Mountains are home to dwarves, gnomes, halflings, and was the site of the Hateful Wars, which brought about the removal of humanoids from the range. The Yatil Mountains have large numbers of orcs, ogres, giants, trolls, and other creatures, such as dragons to the North. The Barrier Peaks are infamous for the unusual creatures inhabiting the range, as well as mysterious artifacts. All are known to provide rich deposits of gems and minerals.
-Within the Barrier Peaks, there is a hidden valley known as the Vale of the Mage. The area is known for legendary beasts and wandering necromancers. Also home to the Dark One and his Valley elves.
-At the Southwest of Bissel lies the Dim Forest, a wood with a dark canopy with nocturnal creatures that hold sway. Humanoids abound, slowly pushing out the native wood elves.
