Greyhawk Journal #1 is Here!

Greyhawk Journal 1 is back again!

Once again, my thanks to the authors and staff who made it possible.

And again, my apologies for my error that resulted it in disappearing for a week. One article has been replaced with a fill-in from me. I hope you find it worthy.

Now to make the next issue even better.

Wow this is a great zine! I especially enjoyed Moore's terakollosans and of course Magepoint. I am happy Rick Miller could finally get his vision of that town published. Hats off to Troy, Paul, Sam, Ewan, Marc and Allan for their work.

I just started reading through it. Great! A quibble concerning one of my real life hobby horses, tactical proficiency:

Most of the "Levied" would mostly be 0 level Men (maybe 1-6 or 1-8 hps), and "Regulars" would be 0 level Fighters/Men-at-Arms (4-7 hps, 1st level Fighter-like weapon and armor skills), but "Elite" or Guards could easily be 1st level Fighters ("Elite Guards" definitely are):

https://archive.org/details/tsr02007swordsspells/page/n7/mode/2up

Swords & Spells, pp. 5-6, 19-20, 33, 34.

...so a lot of the troops would actually be 1st level Fighters, and some of the sergeants could easily be 2nd level.

I will continue my reading. Wink

Well . . . yes.
Of course, once we go that far, "man-at-arms" used to mean the equivalent of a knight and was not a generic term for a grunt guard.
And then I start ranting about spears and shields.
And do not get me started on the F-word (feudalism).

I will note, Rick does reference the Dragon 37 article and the 1E DMG tables for officers and levels. As to how well that meshes with other references and editions is something individual DMs would have to resolve. The stats for all of the troops would be much different in 3, 4, and 5.

Since we cannot do stats for every edition for every article we go with what the author presents and expect fans will adjust as necessary for edition.
Of course, if you would like to volunteer an article on troop composition and levels in certain forces, I expect I could find room for it in a future issue. ;)[/i]

I was blown away with Roger's terakollosans from the moment I opened the file after he submitted it.
Roger has been on a completely different level with his current batch of articles for the Journal, Grimoire, Visions, and Wildspace.
I hope he keeps sending me more as I will always have space for him.

Rick brought me on when he did OJ 15 years or so back, and now I am working with him again. Aside from his Daemonite Productions, I am happy to have space for him in the zine.

Troy is, at this time, a regular columnist. That is on top of his Cannibaal Publications material. Every item and creature he sends makes the zine feel completely.

Paul is also a regular. And he seems to be able to take my crazy sound bite ideas and make them into something useful.

Ewan, Marc, and Allan provided needed editorial support. It is why I keep saying it is all about the team. I get to have my name on top, but without them it would just be a "save to pdf" netbook of my ramblings. The team is what makes the zine.

-I remember seeing examples of guys here were rated as "men-at-arms" (i.e., below a knight) who led 1,000 man battalions.

-D&D 3.5, I generally translate the 4-7 hps "man-at-arms" as a 1st level Warriors or 1st level Aristocrats, and the lesser 0 level types as 1st level Commoners or Experts. A 1st level Fighter in AD&D or the older D&Ds might be a 2nd level Warrior in D&D 3.5.

In my official List of rule modifications, I use the following sources for training and experience prerequisites:

D&D 3.5 DMG, pp. 197-198;
AD&D 2 DMG, p. 49;
AD&D1 DMG, pp. 86, 94;
AD&D1 Greyhawk
Adventures, pp. 119-124;
D&D 3.0 Stronghold Builder’s Guide, p. 32;
Dragon
Magazine #51, pp. 22-27.

You could through in Swords & Spells (above), the rules for 0 level Cavaliers from Dragon Magazine #72 (?) and AD&D1 Unearthed Arcana, and the rules from AD&D Treasure Hunt (N4) for additional guidance and flavor.

I could, I've already done a lot of the work:

...although I've since modified ("corrected") some parts. Slight editing for your format may be required. Wink

Other commitments won't allow to finish before February 2026, but I imagine the Oerth Journal isn't leaving us any time soon?

I've also thought about writing a detailed write up on what happened to all of those bandits and brigands who got captured at the Battle of the Loftwood, both the ones who enlisted in Archbaron Lexnol's army, and those who didn't.

Well, I do the Greyhawk Journal.
But indeed, I think I have at least 3 issues with currently available material, and hope to get submissions for more beyond that.
