RSS Help Thread

Now that the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are installed on the CF mainpage, and in the forums, you can use an RSS aggregator application, or an XML enabled homepage (like the personalized page you get at Yahoo.com) to quickly see what's new on CF without logging into the site over and over all day long. For a quick overview of RSS and how to use it, check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(protocol) But if you have questions about how to get set up, or modify the feeds to better serve your surfing habits, post your questions here and we'll try and answer them promptly.

Just paste the threads you want into your RSS Aggregator (Reader, for us non-techie types) or your XML enabled portal page and you're good to go.

Note: If you have an RSS reader installed, try using the find/detect feeds feature that most of them have, you should automatically detect all the feeds from within this post! Then confirm the ones you want.

You should then see, by default, the topic lines for the 5 most recent posts for each forum you've selected, along with a 200 character long snippet of that post's text.

In the next post, I'll explain how to customize the feeds.

Now, for a little customizing:

To change the number of recent posts your feed displays, simply making the following adjustment to the code:

Replace the 5, highlighted below in a sample url, with the number of posts you want to see:

http: //www.canonfire.com/cf/rdf-nuke.php?fid=21&type=latest&count= 5 &chars=200&titlepattern=[WelcomeToGH]%20__DATE__%20__TITLE__

Make sure there are NO spaces anywhere in the url.

Now, to change the length of the post snippet you want displayed, simply change the 200, highlighted below in a sample url, with the number of characters you want to display:

http: //www.canonfire.com/cf/rdf-nuke.php?fid=21&type=latest&count=5&chars= 200 &titlepattern=[WelcomeToGH]%20__DATE__%20__TITLE__

To disable the snippet, showing only the headlines for the posts, set the number to 0. Note that with or without snippets turned on, the headline will generally act as a link to the post's page here on the forum, so snippets are purely a personal preference, and will not affect the RSS feed one bit.

Do not fiddle with any of the other sections of the url, as doing so will create a parse error that will render the feed unreadable to you.

And remember, your finished url should have NO spaces anywhere in it when you enter it into your reader or homepage.

Almost forgot. That's the RSS feed for viewing the 10 most recent articles added to the Canonfire main page. You can't customize it, but you can add it to your other feeds exactly as mentioned above.
